Analyzing White America Essay
After viewing ââ¬Å"Analyzing White Americaâ⬠by Paul Mooney, I was initially taken aback by the content. I never expected the rawness that Mooney brought to the stage and he hit the ground running with such a tone without looking back. A lot of the material made me laugh or at the very least smile because i found it to be identifiable with my own life and some of the surroundings that I was brought up in. The part that I found most amusing was Mooneyââ¬â¢s suggestion that white people were happier before slavery was abolished. I believe racism is very much present in todayââ¬â¢s world. When I was growing up, I can recall plenty of neighborhoods in my hometown that were considered ââ¬Å"whiteâ⬠or even ââ¬Å"blackâ⬠for that matter. In these neighborhoods, if you were not from that part of town, you were not considered welcomed there. Any parts of the film that I did not laugh at, there was no particular reason other than I simply was not amused by the material because there were not any parts that I found personally offensive. I feel as though the word ââ¬Å"niggerâ⬠is so controversial solely because of itââ¬â¢s history and the origin of itââ¬â¢s meaning. This word was meant to degrade and disparage African Americans when it was originated. Today, people use the term in a different context. The new meaning is one of affection but with itââ¬â¢s use comes this unwritten rule that white people are prohibited from saying it. I never could wrap my mind fully around the idea that I can say the word ââ¬Å"niggaâ⬠in reference to a friend of mine but a white kid was not allowed to use it, in the same context, all because we are of different races. In my opinion, itââ¬â¢s not right for either myself or a white person to use the word in any context. In todayââ¬â¢s society, everything is just as much about race as it was in the days of slavery. The only difference between now and then is that openly addressing the issues that we, as a culture, all have with race is socially unacceptable. Mooneyââ¬â¢s antics on stage were not without warrant. He recognizes that racism is still a major issue and he chooses to address it differently than the average person. Paulââ¬â¢s words are not meant to slander or belittle any one race, religion, or ethnice group, but instead he wants to make his audience to expand their minds and think about what it is he is really saying. Granted, his demeanor is controversial, I believe he achieves just that.

Cathy William essays
Cathy William essays In preparation for a research paper on Cathy Williams the first female Buffalo Soldier, a book was from the library; Cathy Williams from Slave Girl to Female Buffalo Soldier by Phillip Thomas Tucker. Articles about Cathy were read and printed out from the internet. The book, Cathy Williams from Slave Girl to Female Buffalo Soldier, was very insightful, and a lot of information was obtained. The articles helped to fill in some of the gaps in Cathys life that the book left out. For instance, the book gave the month but not actual dates that Cathy was sent to duty stations or infirmaries. That information was obtained from the articles found online. Cathy Williams First Female Buffalo Soldier Cathy Williams was born into slavery in September of 1844. Her mother was Martha Williams. Her father is unknown, although he could have been a freedman. Marriage between her parents would have been illegal, if this were the case because of their different social statuses. She was born in or around Independence, Missouri, on a plantation owned by William Johnson. Mr. Johnson, his family, and servants, including Cathy, would move to Jefferson City, Missouri, around 1850. This is where she would grow up. Cathy was considered a house girl. As a household servant, she was in the highest status in slave society. Some of her chores could have been; to set tables, draw bath water, cooking, cleaning, and assisting Mrs. Johnson. Mr. Johnson died just before the start of the Civil War. She stayed with his family even after his death. Rebel soldiers would take over Jefferson City, only to be defeated by the Union soldiers. The Union soldiers then freed the slaves of Jefferson City, including Cathy. The 8th Indiana Regiment would take Cathy and other freed slaves as "contraband." On August 6, 1861, fugitive slaves were declared to be contraband of war if their labor had b...
How to Make a Rubric for Differentiation
How to Make a Rubric for Differentiation Rubrics are rules or a way to explicitly lay out expectations for an assignment, and the means to evaluate or grade an assignment using a point system. Rubrics work very well for differentiated instruction, as you can establish different levels of performance for general education students and for children receiving special education services. As you start making your rubric, think about the things you need to know to assess a students performance on a project/paper/group effort. You need to create four or more categories to evaluate and then establish the criteria for each score. You can format your rubric as a questionnaire or as a chart. Be sure it is clearly written, as you want to give it to your students and review it as you introduce the assignment. When you are done, you can tailor your use of the information for the following: IEP data collection, especially for writing.Your grading/reporting format: i.e., 18 of 20 points is 90% or an A.To report to parents or students. A Simple Writing Rubric The numbers suggested are good for 2nd or 3rd-grade assignments. Adjust for the age and ability of your group. Effort: Does the student write several sentences on the topic? 4 points: Student writes 5 or more sentences about the topic.3 points: Student writes 4 sentences about the topic.2 points: Student writes 3 sentences about the topic.1 point: Student writes 1 or 2 sentences about the topic. Content: Does the student share enough information to make the writing selection interesting? 4 points: Student shares 4 or more facts about the subject3 points: Student shares 3 facts about the subject2 points: Student shares 2 facts about the subject1 point: Student shares at least one fact about the subject. Famous Person Story essays
Famous Person Story essays First, I would like to be Bill Gates. I would be the richest person in the whole wide world because I would never have to worry about borrowing money. I would own Microsoft, which is the leader in the computer software industry. What if the stock market crashed? Then that would be a problem because I would then go bankrupt. In the mean time, I would rather be a basketball star. I would like to be Michael Jordan, who is the best basketball player in many decades. Basketball would not be too hard because I play it in my leisure time. I would get money for entertaining the crowd with my three-pointers and dunks. Even though, I would not be as wealthy as Bill Gates, I would still become famous in basketball. I would also like to become famous in football. I would choose to be Walter Payton if I became famous in football. Even though I risk my chances of getting hurt with my speed and size, I should be able to run over the tacklers and find my way into the end zone. Obviously, I am more physical but Bill Gates and Michael Jordan have more money then I do. I would enjoy becoming famous in baseball, too. Sometimes, I think about hitting homeruns; thats why I would enjoy being Ken Griffey Jr. I can hit homeruns day and night with my strength. I could also be the hero of the day for my team by hitting a game winner. I would go in the record books for all my homeruns that I hit. Well, I would get worn-out after a while so in addition, I would like becoming a rapper. Finally, I would like to be Nelly. I know I would get famous after one hit song because I am well known. I would make plenty of cash for selling my music. Well, I guess it is up to me who I really want to be. Do I really know who I really want to be? ...
The Discovery of Biotech Rice essays
The Discovery of Biotech Rice essays U.S. Researchers said that they have engineered a rice plant that can stand drought, cold and salty water without destroying the plant itself. The experimental rice plant has been re-engineered with a natural sugar to yield a more productive plant. And you can be sure that it is edible. Biologists at Cornell University in New York who invented and examined the re-engineered plant over six years are positive that it could help farmers working in coastlines. The transgenic rice utilizes the advantages of trehalose. Trehalose is a sugar that occurs naturally in bacteria, yeast and fungi. It also helps retain the individual cell structure and function during intense environmental pressure that would destroy plants. The Cornell researchers combined two different trehalose that will create E-coli genes to produce a gene they place in the genome of Indian rice varieties. They capped it off with promoter sequences that prepared the plant to increase trehalose production in unfavorable conditions. For example, if the temperature is below average. The outcome was a plant that could survive temperatures as low as 10 degrees Celsius, endure for up to five days without water and thrive in a very salty water. Even in unstressful conditions, the transgenic plant can be more efficient at photosynthesis. It can even enhance its production or crop. They also said that with this strategy, it can also work on other crops such as corn, millet, wheat, soybeans, and sugarcane. With this invention, I think it would be very helpful to us especially to the farmers. With extreme environmental conditions, it could destroy plants. But with this discovery, it can resist extreme heat and cold. We know that we have shortage on food production but with the help of this, we can actually solve our problem. But we do not know yet if it has side effects once we eat this ...

Literature Survey on Implementation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Literature Survey on Implementation - Essay Example This volume intends to survey the means and insights in sending a wake-up call that moved the general observation and that goes beyond simple examination. On realization of a widening gap between the conception and implementation of policies, Mazmanian, Daniel, Paul (125) initiated a wave of critics in response to the noted political irresponsibility. In his book, Bardarch (55) imprints a deep message that sort to effect more congruence within the public policy processes to consequently ensure that the legislated actions and policies intentions were carried out in actual sense and in reality. They wrote their books based on the relevance basing their sentiments to the ongoing discussions and debates about the credibility of the government to challenge the true democratic reorganization (Mazmanian, Daniel, Paul, 124). The work is very relevant and extends a helping hand to assist in the much-needed debate concerning the administrative underpinning of the governance, which came at a time of the fall of the unresponsive, and unaccountable government had yet not found any lasting solution for public management. One cannot fail to note the compelling effect and clarity of vision they all bring to the issue. In their book, Pressman, Jeffrey, and Aaron (70) presents a picture the general society would not admire. The book is not optimistic at all; as the theme course along the concept of ââ¬Å"declare it done and it will be doneâ⬠method of central control that is mostly satisfied in just having a good policy or a great legislation without giving much regard to the means by which is will get executed. Denhardt (22) employs powerful stands and perspectives to develop and create a ground to consider critically the issue of implementation. As of today, he takes the task of redefining the study of the structure of administration in relation to public policy. He offers a detailed and refined examination of the vital elements about both the potential for success and
MicroEconomics Supply and Demand Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
MicroEconomics Supply and Demand - Essay Example The worldââ¬â¢s leading brands are accessing the Japanese departmental stores to sell their limited edition products. The sales of chocolates in the Valentine season pick up like anything. Primary Economic Elements The soaring demand for chocolates in Japan near the Valentine season presents a positive opportunity for the local and international Chocolatiers. It is not that the Japanese are particularly fond of chocolates. In general, the Japanese are not avid chocolate fans and their panache for the local delicacy ââ¬Å"Wagashiâ⬠does tend to have precedence over chocolates. However, the Valentineââ¬â¢s-Day celebrations are a different thing. The contemporary Japanese youth closely associates the Valentine season with love and romance and the consumption of chocolates registers an exceptional spike in the Valentineââ¬â¢s season. Not only the local Chocolatiers do their best to profit from this surge in chocolate consumption, but the Chocolatiers hailing from around th e world, including Belgium, Switzerland and other European countries do know well that during this time of the year, the price is not a big consideration for the local chocolate lovers. The demand for chocolates in Japan during the two weeks preceding the Valentineââ¬â¢s-Day augments to the extent that it is getting really difficult for the suppliers to import and manufacture a commensurate stock. Most of the malls and departmental stores do run out of stock just a few days before the Valentineââ¬â¢s-Day. The sales of chocolate that rest at a conservative monthly average of 34 billion yen during the regular season incredulously soar to 55 billion yen during the valentine season. People do not hesitate to buy boxes of chocolates costing as high as 28, 350 yen or $ 340. The Chocolatiers play on the fantasies of the consumers by offering variations like chocolate doll houses and even chocolate furniture costing 10, 000 yen a piece. The foreign and local Chocolatiers leave no ston e unturned to accrue sales from niche segments that have a particular predilection for ââ¬Å"Kawaiiâ⬠chocolate, exchanged amongst women as a part of a local custom, comprising of a menagerie of chocolate animals like chickens, flying pigs, bugs and bunnies. This trend for chocolate is expected to become stronger in the times to come. The global players in the chocolate business have already taken cognizance of this fact. Graphical Analysis During the regular season, the demand for chocolate in Japan, as any other perishable consumer good is price elastic and follows the classic law of demand. As the Price of chocolate increases from P to Pââ¬â¢, the demand for chocolate falls from D to Dââ¬â¢. Besides, people start opting for local substitutes like Wagashi. Price of Chocolate Pââ¬â¢ P D1 Dââ¬â¢ D Units of Chocolate During the Valentine season, the things are different. The increase in the demand for chocolates moves the demand curve up along the supply curve from D1 to D2. This movement along the supply curve gives way to a new equilibrium price. This not only leads to an increase in the price of chocolates, but also results in a commensurate increase in the demand for chocolates. The Chocolatiers can benefit from this situation by pouring in more supplies in the Japanese markets. Price of Chocola
